1775–1817

Jane Austen

Jane Austen (1775–1817) wrote six novels of manners, money, and marriage in Regency England, none of them published under her own name in her lifetime. Her wit is carried almost entirely in dialogue and free indirect narration, which is why her opening sentences do so much work — both novels here are free in IO reader.
